Defra and the Devolved Administrations in Wales and Scotland launched in 2004 the GB Animal Health and Welfare Strategy which is a ten year programme, the aims of which are as relevant today as they were when launched (Animal Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain). This gives some practical examples of industry initiatives such as the development of the cross industry RUMA Alliance (the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance).
Defra set up the England Implementation Group (EIG) charged with overseeing the strategy and similar but different approaches were adopted in Scotland and Wales. EIG was disbanded in 2009 but one of the legacies was the recognition of the need for species specific sector councils/groups to look after the interests of that sector. Hence the Cattle Health and Welfare Group (CHAWG) was established with funding provided by AHDB Beef & Lamb and AHDB Dairy and the Sheep Health and Welfare Group (SHAWG) was established with funding provided by AHDB Beef & Lamb.
