AHDB Beef & Lamb is working with the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants (BIAC) to deliver continuous professional development (CPD) to consultants and advisers who want to develop their beef expertise.

The programme, which was launched in December 2015, was set up to ensure well-trained and experienced consultants and advisers continue to be available to the beef industry. The first group have now completed the programme, which consisted of five meetings:

  1. Herd performance and selecting cattle for slaughter, Lancashire

This two-day event included a visit to Rowntree Farm, near Clitheroe, followed by a ‘Live to Dead’ day at Dunbia, Sawley. More information about the meeting can be found in the beef expertise group press release.

  1. Beef feed efficiency, Yorkshire

Delegates received an introduction to the Beef Improvement Group’s Net Feed Efficiency project and the AHDB Beef & Lamb and DEFRA-funded Beef Feed Efficiency Programme. Sessions also included factors affecting the meat quality of beef and a workshop on Estimated Breeding Values. The meeting finished with a workshop on influencing skills.

  1. Grassland management, Devon

This meeting included sessions on how to create a grazing plan and top tips for maximising beef performance off grass. It included a visit to Rothamsted Research, North Wyke to view the farm platform and the SUREROOT project .

  1. Cattle health, Surrey

Delegates took part in sessions on youngstock health, building design, herd health planning and the results of the AHDB-funded Fallen Stock Project. The meeting also included a visit to the University of Surrey pathology centre.

  1. Feeding cattle, Shropshire

At this meeting topics addressed included best practice advice on feeding suckler cows, what research is telling us regards calf rearing and beef finishing and how to formulate rations. Discussion also included the implications of Brexit for the UK beef industry.
